Pen-y-Dyffryn Hotel is fortunate to be situated midway between four superb major National Trust Properties – Powis Castle, Chirk Castle, Attingham Hall and Erddig. Each one is very different from the others.
Chirk Castle. (15 mins drive). Chirk Castle is a Norman border fortress castle, with dungeons, suits of armour and turrets. The gardens are informal and beautiful.
Erddig (20 mins drive). This is a real upstairs/dowmstairs house which was neglected from approx 1900-1970 and is complete with sculleries, kitchens and pantries and the servants sleeping quarters. The gardens have been restored and are now a real attraction.
Powis Castle (30 mins drive). A red sandstone castle with beautiful gardens and The Clive Museum inside. The gardens are packed with flowering plants usually at the peak of perfection. This one of the National Trust’s finest properties.
Attingham Park (30 mins away) An 18th-century mansion near Shrewsbury, with Regency interiors and a deer park. Lots of paintings, silver and furniture collections. The gardens are gradually being restored.
And a bit further away….
Bodnant Gardens (Just over an hour away). Regularly voted as one of the Natioal Trust’s members favourite gardens. Jointly run by the National Trust and the R.H.S, there are many collections of plants, notably Camellias, Rhododendrons, and Azaleas.
