Spring is going straight into Summer – the Rhododendrons are out at the same time as the daffodils! This has to be the best time of year to visit Shropshire – lambs gambolling in the fields, hills clothed in yellow gorse and purple heather, dry underfoot for walking, and the National Trust gardens coming into full flower. And the kitchen is flooded with seasonal produce to titillate the taste buds!

The sun has been shining on Shropshire for over a week now and the hills are glistening white with the remains of the snow. All roads are open and most footpaths are passable so the walkers are out in strength taking advantage of the beautiful Alpine-like conditions. All National Trust gardens are fully open and the daffodils seems to have survived the snow’s ravages. Log fires burning in both lounges – much appreciated by the hotel guests. Hotel nearly completely full for the next few weeks.

Blessed with an overwhelming sense of peace and serenity, you’re never far from civilisation at Pen-y-Dyffryn. This English/Welsh borderland positively breathes history.
There are four major National Trust properties within half an hours drive of the hotel; Powis Castle, Chirk Castle, Attingham Hall and Erddig. Each merits a day visit in itself. And just a little further afield is Bodnant, regularly voted by National Trust Members as the nations favourite gardens.
The medieval timbered towns of Chester and Shrewsbury are only a short drive away, and both are major tourist attractions in themselves. The small and friendly market town of Oswestry is three miles away, hosting the biggest street market in Shropshire on a Wednesday and a Saturday.

The Ironbridge Gorge, a World Heritage site, is about forty-five minutes drive, and the Snowdonia National Park is about the same distance in the other direction.
Wales’ highest and most spectacular waterfall, Pistyll Rhaeadr, is a “must do”, as are two of Thomas Telford’s spectacular aqueducts, Llangollen and Chirk, perfect for those who prefer walking on the flat! Lake Vyrnwy, Lake Bala and Shropshires’ own Lake District at Ellesmere are also close by.

Excellent coarse and fly fishing is available on several of the lakes and rivers in the area, and don´t forget to look out our “Walking” page. Pen-y-Dyffryn is in superb hill-walking country and the hotel has numerous free walking leaflets, all starting at the hotel front door.
