Although blessed with an overwhelming sense of peace and serenity, you're never far from civilisation at Pen-y-Dyffryn. This English/Welsh borderland positively breathes history.
There are four major National Trust properties within half an hours drive of the hotel; Powis Castle, Chirk Castle, Attingham Hall and Erddig. Each merits a day visit in itself. And just a little further afield is Bodnant, regularly voted by National Trust Members as the nations favourite gardens.
The medieval timbered towns of Chester and Shrewsbury are only a short drive away, and both are major tourist attractions in themselves. The small and friendly market town of Oswestry is three miles away, hosting the biggest street market in Shropshire on a Wednesday and a Saturday.
The Ironbridge Gorge, a World Heritage site, is about forty-five minutes drive, and the Snowdonia National Park is about the same distance in the other direction.
Wales' highest and most spectacular waterfall, Pistyll Rhaeadr, is a “must do”, as are two of Thomas Telford's spectacular aqueducts, Llangollen and Chirk, perfect for those who prefer walking on the flat! Lake Vyrnwy, Lake Bala and Shropshires' own Lake District at Ellesmere are also close by.
Excellent coarse and fly fishing is available on several of the lakes and rivers in the area, and don´t forget to look out our “Walking” page. Pen-y-Dyffryn is in superb hill-walking country and the hotel has numerous free walking leaflets, all starting at the hotel front door.
"Excellent base for walking. First class food and accommodation. We will return." Mr and Mrs Lees (2008)
