Wales, Local Information
Wales and the Welsh mountains guard Shropshire's western border, and as you head west from the hotel the character of the country becomes inescapably Welsh. Pen-y-Dyffryn is an ideal place from which to start exploring the nearby Welsh countryside- the border runs right through the hotel grounds!
Discover the delights of Lake Vyrnwy and the charm of the historic castles of Powis, Chirk and Whittington, which formed part of a chain of Welsh border fortifications. Powis Castle now houses the magnificent Clive of India treasures and has one of Prince Charles' favourite gardens, whilst Chirk Castle manages to combine magnificent staterooms with infamous dungeons. Whittington Castle, meanwhile, is reputedly the former home of Dick, who later found fame and fortune in countless pantomimes across the land.
The spectacular limestone cliffs at Llanymynech, where lead, copper and zinc have been mined since Roman times, are now a haven for wildlife and a spectacular golf course.
