Introduction
Pen-y-Dyffryn Hotel is located three miles from the Shropshire town of Oswestry and offers a restaurant and 14 guest rooms, all with en-suite facilities.
The building, formerly a rectory, is nearly 200 years old and is a Grade2 listed building. It is scenically located on the side of a hill close to the Welsh border. Whilst we aim to meet the needs of all our guests there are some limitations for disabled guests due its hillside setting and its Georgian period features.

The nearest bus stops are in the town of Oswestry.
Gobowen/Oswestry railway station is approximately 4 miles away, connecting with Chester and Shrewsbury railway stations.
Taxis are usually available and we can book one for you in advance if required, including a disability friendly taxi.
Manchester and Birmingham Airports are both 1 hour by car
We are a pet friendly hotel, but please check with us on an individual booking basis. We do of course welcome assistance dogs.
Car Parking and Arrival
We have a private car park situated on level ground next to the hotel for customer use only.
Access to the property is gained from the car park up a flight of stone steps to the hotel front door. There is a handrail on the steps and they are well lit at night.
There is also one disabled car parking bay at the top of a ramp to the side of the front steps. This is suitable for luggage drop-off and for wheelchair access from the car, as it bypasses the steps. But there are still two steps to navigate at the front door threshold, so assistance will be required by wheelchair users or guests with restricted mobility. Staff are always on hand to help.
Welcome Area
Guests are welcomed in the hallway.
Soft seating is available.
The area is well lit with overhead lighting and floor lamps.
Assistance can be given with luggage.
Bedrooms
All bedrooms are en-suite (bath, or shower, or both), with TV, tea and coffee making facilities etc. Some are double beds, some are twins. See our website for more details.
Eight of our fourteen guest rooms are in the in the main hotel building. Seven of them are on the first floor and are accessed by means of stairs. There is a handrail on one side. One of these bedrooms (The Cottage Room) has a short internal staircase so may not be suited to guests with walking difficulties or impaired vision. Care will be needed when moving around this bedroom at night.
One of the guest rooms in the main hotel building is on the ground floor, The Terrace Room, accessed immediately off the reception area. There are no steps required to move from the reception area to the Terrace Room. Terrace Room is en-suite with a power shower, armchair, TV etc. This room also has French windows opening onto the garden. There are two steps required to move from the Terrace room into the garden. The steps have a handrail on one side. The Terrace Room may be suited to guests with restricted mobility but is not suited to wheelchair users without assistance.
Six of our guest rooms are in converted out-buildings. (See our website for details). All these bedrooms are accessed from the rear lounge of the hotel, up a flight of stone steps and onto a path. The steps are well lit and have a handrail. Due to the geography of the site these outside rooms are not suited to wheelchair users or those with severe mobility restrictions. But all paths and steps hard surfaced and are well lit at night.
Four of these outside bedrooms (Coach House Rooms) are approximately 20 metres to the side of the main hotel, in an elevated location, and each has a private patio. Two more (The Valley Rooms) are at the top of the hotel garden, approximately 50 metres from the main building. They are also in an elevated position and have private patios. There are further steps required to access these rooms from the garden path, so are particularly unsuited to wheelchair users or guests with severe mobility issues. But the advantage of these outside rooms is the peaceful location and the wonderful views.
Our beds are normally made up with duvets but sheets and blankets can be provided if preferred. Our standard pillows are polyester, however alternatives are also available. Please specify before your arrival if required.
Every guest room has comfortable seating, bedside tables, TV with remote control, direct dial telephone to reception or any UK number, bedside lamps, a wardrobe, plus a chest of drawers/dressing table. Flat screen Freeview digital TV with subtitles available in all rooms. Room temperature can be individually controlled by the guest using thermostatic radiator valves.
All bedrooms are carpeted apart from The Valley Rooms, which have oak flooring. All bathrooms have non-slip shower mats. Bathroom lighting is bright and all sanitary ware is white.
There are fire alarms and smoke alarms in every bedroom. Emergency procedures are posted on the door to each bedroom and are explained upon check in for any disabled guests upon request.
Public Areas – Halls, Stairs, Landings, Corridors
All public areas, hall, stairs, and landings are well lit using a combination of ceiling and table-lamps.
The hallway, stairs and landings in the main building are carpeted
There are no steps on the ground floor of the main hotel.
There is one staircase to the first floor of the main hotel. The stairs are carpeted and have a handrail on one side.
The hotel is fully centrally heated throughout but temperatures can be adjusted in each room to suit individual requirements.
Wi-Fi is available Free of Charge throughout the public rooms and all of the bedrooms
Public Toilet
There is one “unisex” public toilet in the main building. This is accessed from a half landing on the main hotel staircase, so is not suited to wheelchair users. The room has a wooden floor and is well lit.
Dining Room
The breakfast/dining room is situated off the hallway on the ground floor. There are no steps between the hallway and the dining room. The dining room is carpeted. The tables are spaces sufficiently to provide easy access to the table for guests with limited mobility.
Large windows allowing plenty of natural light supplemented by adjustable overhead and wall lights.
There is a breakfast table where guests can help themselves to cereal, fruits, yoghurts, juices and toast. Assistance can be provided on request.
All diets can be catered for although advance notice is helpful. Larger print menus are available on request. Waiter service is provided for both drinks and meals.
Pets are welcome at the hotel other than in the restaurant. (Service dogs excepted).
Garden
The terraces outside the hotel are level and paved, with teak garden chairs and tables. There are two steps required to move between each terrace. The gardens directly adjoining the hotel are accessed from the hotel terraces by two small steps. The gardens are lawned and sloping, and while paths and lighting are provided, they may be unsuited to guests with severe mobility issues. The terraces are lit until around 11.00pm.
Additional Information
There is an information folder for each of the bedrooms with maps giving information on local pubs, travel, theatres and local golf facilities and area of local interest.
We have storage/drying facilities for golfers, cyclists, and walker’s equipment.
We are happy to cater for special diets or particular likes or dislikes. Please advise us before your arrival.
We can refrigerate prescription medication and additionally store any perishable food in our fridge for a limited period.
Mobile phone reception at is acceptable for EE, but is poor for other network providers.
