Visit the Lakes at Ellesmere Whilst Staying at Pen-y-Dyffryn
Known as Shropshire’s “Lake District”, Ellesmere hosts a glorious collection of “Meres”. Just 20 minutes from Pen-y-Dyffryn, there are plenty of leisurely walks around the lakes and there is plenty of bird life on the water and in the surrounding woods. We particularly recommend Colemere. You are able to walk right around it, it is very quiet, next to the canal, and then you can go back to Ellesmere for any facilities needed.
There are eight other meres nearby which are all worth a visit: Blakemere, Colemere, Crosemere, Kettlemere, Newtonmere, Whitemere, Sweatmere and Hanmer Mere.
The town of Ellesmere is located by the side of ‘the Mere’, one of the largest natural meres in England outside the Lake District. These meres are different from those in the Lake District in that they do not have a flow of water into them to maintain the level.
The Mere has a visitors’ centre located inside the Popular Boathouse Cafe and is popular with birdwatcher, many of whom visit to see grey herons nesting on the Island where a camera has been set up to watch.
